water fun

As a teacher, I often had to step back and look at thing differently. The resources available to a teacher is often limited. But, you realize that you don't need the biggest and best to teach. I can't tell you how many strange items I've collected over the years to use in my classroom (for example: milk bottle caps, bread tags, keys, empty pudding cups, and so much more). Parents often think kids need the newest, best things that are available out there. Yes, my sons have toys, but we have tried not to go overboard on what we get them.

Blake loves to explore and this was evident when we were playing on the porch the other day. I brought out some paint brushes (yes the are fancy ones, but they didn't have to be), a wash cloth and some water. Here are some pictures of his play and tomorrow you will see the video of his play also.

  1. I love this age!!! Daycare does this neat shaving cream project...they use the cheap foamy kind (not that gel first stuff)...

  3. So true my friend. Being a kindergarten teacher turned mommy as well...it is so easy to find just any old thing to entertain them. I use tons of things to let them paint with...green peppers cut up, apples, indian corn, marbles in a shoe box. They love painting. On hot summer days we paint the garage with water. Way fun! I also use dried beans or rice to let them practice their letters & numbers in. The ideas are endless. Thanks for sharing and getting my creative juices flowing on this lovely rainy day.

  5. You are so right about not needing the newest, biggest toys! Madison still gets super excited when a package comes in the mail if it is in a huge box! It doesn't matter what is inside she just wants the box!

  7. J and I pulled out bowls from the cupboard and played a sorting game. He loves kitchen utensils . . .

And, he digs laundry. It is crazy how much fun he has pulling it around with him, lifting it up, swinging it around.

And, soup cans or anything else that will roll.

It makes me wonder why I spent so much $$$ on toys!!!

  8. my kids often like the box the fancy toy comes in more than the actual tox- they are so creative with the 'normal' things we have around the house.

  12. My son loves to be outdoors and loves bugs. One time he had a pan and a shovel and a bucket of water and played for hours. He would dig up worms give them a bath in the water and then put them back in the pan that had the dirt in it. He did this routine over and over and had a blast!
