I've known for a long time that Blake is a smart cookie. People don't always see that when they see him outside because of his speech issues. But, when you get to know him you see that there is a LOT going on inside that brain of his. Blake watches everything! And he has since he was an itty bitty. That is partially why he was able to developed his gross motor skills so fast. He watched us walk. In order to get him to crawl, I had to actually get down and show him to crawl.
The latest thing that he has shown us this with is the "baby proofing" in the house. I have known for a while that he knew how the baby proof locks worked on the door, but now he is tall enough to open them. The only thing that he can't open yet is the gates. That is because they have multi-steps to open them up and he doesn't have the coordination to open them up. Blake can open the dead bolt on the front door. He can open the latch on the sliding glass door. He can open any knob that is within his reach. That scares me a great deal. He is really good about not leaving and as I said he can't open the gate (yet) so he can't get to the front door without an adult letting him out of his living areas.
Right before Christmas I had to switch the latch out on our pantry. We have lever handles on our doors and Blake has been able to open them up since he was about a year old. Then he learned to open the baby proof lever locks. Now I don't mind him going into the pantry to get food. But, he doesn't just want the stuff on the shelves he can reach... nope my little guy decided that he'd play spiderman and climb the shelves to get the stuff up at MY head level. So, we put a key lock on the pantry door just to keep him safe.
I keep thinking... great when Colby is mobile there won't be any protection for him since Blake will just open up anything and everything Colby wants open.... or maybe the whole sibling thing will kick in and Blake won't open anything for Colby. We shall see
