a toddler's obsession

I had been lucky for a while... Blake had been willing to watch pretty much any show that was on during the times he was allowed to watch tv. Oh he had his favorites (and so did/do I), but he wouldn't demand anything specific. It was more likely that he'd refuse to watch a specific show than demand one. Well that has all changed!

Blake has become obsessed with Thomas the Tank Engine or "rain" as he calls it. He actually will pump his arm up and down and say toot toot when he wants to watch it more than saying "rain". Now we don't have PBS Sprout so we only have Thomas on demand (which means we only have 4 episodes). So one thing we made sure to pick up at Target was Thomas videos. Richard was trying to watch the Daytona 500 last night and Blake found the videos and kept pushing them at Richard until we gave in and put one on.

Today Disney and Nickelodeon are having marathons of shows Blake isn't crazy about so guess what we are watching!

Oh and a side note... I'm not getting into a debate on how much tv young children should watch. I do limit what Blake and Colby watch as far as time and shows.

  2. Been there too. Our Thomas phase didn't last too long. Dora is still the big winner over here.

  3. I'll only say that sometimes tv is a LIFESAVER!! so I'm not one to debate time and toddlers watching tv. I've never had one into Thomas..thank goodness...their toys are soooo expensive!! Now that I've said that Caleb will probably decide he loves them :)

  4. I do like that show. Although, I think I have only seen it on Shining Time Station. I think it is cute and not annoying!! Our code for Signing Time is ST because if we say it Eliza says Time over and over until we put it on.

  5. My son loved Thomas but has been over it for a long time as he is 10 now. My daughter is very into Dora. It is Dora everything. We don't have cable or DTV so if she wants to watch Dora, we have to put in a DVD for her.

  6. Thomas is also Jacob's obsession. Good idea to get the videos that way they are within reach for any spur of the moment requests when it may or may not be on tv.

  7. I'm Not sure what the official "too much " TV ruling is....

but I use TV to MY advantage! If I need a few minutes to get some housework done or some mental break time...LOL!

But I really try to balance our interaction time with their free play time and then some TV time. And I ALWAYS have educational TV on rarely are they watching some random cartoon:)

And that's what works for us! Ohhh, when my kiddies DEMAND to watch TV or as super cranky while watching TV, I know I've been using it too much:)

  8. Yes, they sure do develop favorites. I agree with you on limiting their TV time.

  10. That is too funny. When Lyndsy was first watching TV she would only watch one thing. Zoboomafoo! That was it. Nothing else.

I also find it funny how it seems like ALL boys have the Thomas obsession. What's up with that!?! Don't you wish you were the creator of that one! For girls it seems to be the princess thing. Oh well at least Thomas has a good message behind it.

  11. no judgements here- I know that the tv can sometimes be a mommy's best friend- as long as you limit it, like you do, I have no problems with it

Riley likes choo-choos too. He hasn't started to demand Thomas yet, but I am sure it is just around the corner!

  12. Funny - we've taken out a few Thomas DVDs from the library and Esme hasn't been into them. She likes My Little Pony and Strawberry Shortcake and Pooh. Maybe the first couple are a girl thing?

It is wonderful that she can sit and watch a full DVD now. For so long I was lucky to get 10 minutes of a break before she was bored. So I'm enjoying it immensely!
