Snot

As a kindergarten teacher I hated cold season and why you might ask... SNOT! Kindergartners are notorious for their snot. I can't tell you how many times I say I would say... go blow your nose. Ok now go wash your hands. I hated not only seeing the runny noses but also knowing that their snot could get on me and my clothes. That they are spreading nasty germs to each other an oh yeah that means more snot from another child.

Ok fast forward to mommyhood... now it's my own child with the snotty nose. Oh joy... and wait... I can't just tell him to go blow his nose. Why you ask... cause he is 22 months and never been sick so therefore he doesn't know how to blow his nose. So now I spend my day trying to help him learn to blow his nose, and not out of his mouth. Trying to keep the snot at bay. Oh and washing my hands. And dreading the sound of a sneeze knowing that I have to yet again wipe a nasty snotty nose.

Now Colby is starting to get congested too. Oh joy... where is the nasal aspirator. I can't blame him for being miserable, I can't blame him for hating that thing, but there is no other way to get snot out of a 3 month old.

So we will keep using Vicks Baby Rub on both boys. Hoping that they sleep through the night and have a decent nap. And get over it NOWWWW!

Oh and does anyone have a tip on how to get a toddler to blow his nose???

  5. Have you tried saline spray? I spray J's nose several times a week. No colds, he's learned to blow (just 'cause his mommy sometimes sprays a wee bit too much), and his nasal passages are for the most part always clear!

There is one especially made for babies, so it is extremely gentle.

Here is to a snot-free weekend.

  6. Oh I hate colds - poor kiddies and poor you! Sorry I've got nothing for you - we are still working on the noseblowing thing at our house, too. Esme will happily cover her nose with a hanky, but the blowing part isn't so good. And she screams bloody murder if I try to use a nasal bulb.

  7. Nosefrida to the rescue!! I can't live without mine, it is so much quicker, and my son actually doesn't even mind it that much.... best 15 bucks you'll ever spend.

  8. Eliza has had about 200 boogy noses since she was born. The current one has lasted about three weeks. It is snot everyday all day long. My husband has tried showing her how to blow. He blows into a tissue, then I blow into the tissue and then we put it to her nose to blow. This morning she actually blew out through her nose and we were shocked. Most of the time it is me putting in drops, sucking and wiping!!

  9. I hate snot too.... so gross. I have used every nasal aspirator available on this planet, not one of them really work, but I ordered a Nosefrida and I am (im)patiently waiting for it to arrive. All my friends swear by it so I will give it a shot...snot.....

  10. I too hate snot, have an 18 month old on his 7th day with a runny nose, and I'm a teacher. Ran across your blog via links from others and saw this post on Snot. It struck me as funny because one of my first posts was on my son's infatuation with nosespray and the aspirator. Good luck with the nose blowing lessons.

  11. I second Nosefrida! Get one quick... it has prevented many ear infections in our house, my doctor says that blowing actually pushes the snotty stuff out into the eartubes, so sucking it out is the best!! Get it at nosefrida.com, good luck!

  14. We are all snotty here at my house. For the little one I use saline and it works pretty well. She ABHORS it though.

  15. I am a kindergarten teacher turned mommy too and I totally understand about the snot issue. We're going through it today, as a matter of fact. My daughter sneezed green smoothie on me while having her breakfast today, yum. Earlier, while trying to unsuccessfully booger snarf her nose with the booger snarfer (nasal aspirator), she managed to wipe it all over my shirt--two outfits and it's only 10:00 am! Kindergarten wasn't nearly so hands-on snotty! :-)
