Mixed up Play-doh

As a teacher and as a mother I tend to be more rigid than necessary with things. As a teacher I unused to justify it as I needed to keep things organized with a room full of children. With my own sons, I think it's as much habit as anything.

The other day I decided that Colby needed some one-on-one focused time with me. So on Monday I opened up a Christmas gift of his and let him go to town playing with me. We decided to open up a play-doh kit.

Now as a teacher, and often as a Mommy, I had the rule that you used one color play-doh so that they colors don't get mixed up. I always felt this helped it stay in the containers better and no one was complaining about the colors being mixed.

Photobucket

Well when Colby and I were playing this we through the rules out the window.

Photobucket

Colby had a great time just playing and making his ice cream concoctions. When Blake got home from school they took it out again and the two of them played together for a long time with it. They even took out the Monster Trucks and they got in the fun.

Sometimes you have to throw out the rules and just let them mix the play-doh.

Friday Photos

Colby decided to play with my old camera yesterday. He took 170 pictures... yes you read that right! Here is a collection of them. I find it interesting to see what they want to photograph and how they look at the world.

1st Dentist Appointment

Yesterday Blake and Colby went to their first dentist appointment. We had a new pediatric dentist open last year, so we added the boys to our dental insuarance. I finally got up the courage to call and make the appointments. It went pretty much as I expected: Blake fought everything until he knew for certain what was going on and Colby just chilled out and went along. Blake did better at letting them in his mouth than I expected and actually kept his mouth open for almost the whole visit (except when he was screaming). Colby had a harder time keeping his mouth open and didn't seem to know what to do with his tongue. Next time I can't go in with them, so lets hope it goes smoothly in August!

I of course being the Momma-razzi that I've turned into brought my camera and took pictures

All in one year

When we started 2010, we had Colby in diapers and Blake in pull-ups. Over the summer Blake began mastering the toilet and now stays dry overnight! He has been doing it for over a month and we finally said... enough pull-ups for you. In the beginning of November we began sitting Colby on the toilet when he woke up in the morning, before bath time and before bed. He had totally understood the concept. Yesterday I decide... ok it's time. We spent the morning going to the bathroom every 10 minutes and jumping for joy when I caught the right time and changing about 10 pairs of soiled underwear. Things got better in the afternoon.

Today went surprisingly smoothly. We only had one pee accident and 2 poop accidents, but I was VERY happy. We are going a lot longer between bathroom trips and aren't even using the timer anymore. He has yet to ask to pee on his own, but is very aware of what is going on, so I suspect that will come soon. We are not having to reward him the same way we did Blake, but I think the age difference has a lot to do with that.

So it looks like we will end 2010 with two boys wearing underwear. Colby will wear a pull-up to bed for a while and probably to run errans until I know he has totally mastered it. But, I look at this as a pay raise for me. Yes, I know I don't actually get a pay check, but I'm now saving the family a lot of money not having to buy diapers and so many pull-ups!

Hope the end of 2010 is better than the beginning in your family. I can only hope that my 2011 is a ton better than 2010, not sure I could handle another 2010.

It's time to sleep

Today was one of those days when I wish Colby still took a nap. It wasn't that I needed the alone time, it was the fact that he was soooo tired. He is very congested and that makes sleeping a challenge for him. So even when he gets a full night sleep he often wakes up tired. He was happy to at least wake up in time to see Blake and Daddy before they left. Many mornings he sleeps right through this time. He was not his happy cheerful self today it was even worse after the Y. He had a great time playing at the Y and in his class. The group fitness room at our Y's air conditioner is broken... do you see an issue here? It was very hot in there for his class and he wanted to stick it out to get his sticker at that end. He did a good job, but came home very tired. I let him eat lunch on the couch, not that he actually ate. He doesn't eat very well when he doesn't feel good.... thank God for "yogurt milk" because that is often the only real food I get into him on those days. While he was eating his lunch he kept sliding down on the couch and I swore he was going to fall asleep. He put up a good fight and didn't sleep. I asked him more than once if he wanted to lay down and do "snoozes", but he was adamant that he wasn't going to his room.

Tonight he settled right away to begin with and then the congestion kicked in. When this happens he wants to be cuddled, he wants to snuggle. This would be fine if it meant he'd fall asleep but like he did when he was younger, but now he doesn't. He sees this as a time to fool around and play which then makes it frustrating. You want to help him settle, but need him to realize that he can't choose something to get away with not sleeping. It's such a hard choice. When Blake was young we did cry it out with him and it still comes in handy in the fact that he can settle himself on his own no matter the situation. It isn't always fast or smooth but he doesn't expect to be cuddled and soothed to sleep. When we tried this with Colby we had TWO crying children. It didn't work. Not only did it upset Blake, but Colby would make himself sick crying which isn't good. So other methods were put into place for him. The challenge is the transition. A majority of nights he just goes to bed and goes to sleep. It's how to help him on those nights when he can't just fall asleep.

As I type this up Richard is in Colby's room. I can hear Colby on the monitor playing and trying to get Richard to play with him. But, we know he is exhausted, as mentioned earlier. So, is it that he is over tired? Is he too congested to fall asleep? Did he get himself overworked when he first started having issues settling? Who knows. It will just be interesting to see how long it takes him to settle.

Oh the joys of parenthood! Hope your little ones go to sleep smoothly for you, and if not know you aren't alone (o:

Back on the couch again

Well, I got to sleep on the couch again. That is never a good sign. It means one of my boys isn't sleeping well/at all. Last night it was Colby. He has been fighting some nasal congestion, he even taught himself to blow his nose this week. Last night I didn't give him any allergy medicine since he hadn't been coughing and seemed to be doing better... WRONG.

Shortly after falling asleep he began crying in his sleep. Well 3 hours later I finally got him to settle back down and sleep. I think it was 3 hours... who knows. He did end up taking a nap today and went straight to sleep tonight so hopefully this was a one time deal. Needless to say it through my goals off just a bit.

When he woke up in the morning not only was he tired, but he was also coughing a lot so we decided to have a quiet morning of watching tv, snuggling on the couch and a bit of playing trains. After he woke up, he decided that we needed to have some computer time which he doesn't ask for very often.

I did manage to get a few errands done that I was going to do tomorrow so that works too.

Today's goals:
-- go to the Y [nope]

Naptime ... no more

I'm shocked to say this, but I decided it is best to let Colby give up his nap. He has been fighting it on and off for about a month. The days he didn't nap he went right to sleep at night, and the days he did nap he fought bedtime until after 8pm and sometimes as late as 9pm. I decided last night, after I posted my blog, that I can't force him to nap just so I get a bit of time alone. I really feel it is best for him to get a good night sleep. So now, both boys go down around 6:30 with the hopes of them both asleep by 7pm. Yes, it might sound early, but they get up between 6:30 and 7am so they are getting 12 hours of sleep which is what they need. I just can't believe that my 2 year 2 month old is no longer napping.

The other positive with this is it frees up our days immensely. I don't have to worry about getting home in time for nap time. We can do more as a family on the weekends without the worry of a needed nap. It just means we have to be home and settled for bedtime for both boys.

Now I just have to figure out when I get to watch my tv shows and what to do with Colby all day on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Today was tough because it was raining alllllll day so we couldn't get out to play. I forgot how many things you have to do to entertain a two year old by yourself all day.

I hope you got a chance to check out my Tasty Tuesday recipe today... if not click here and check out some yummy cookies!

***********************************************************************************
Today's goals:
-- get up to do p90x [nope we decided that we'd skip it since my sinuses are still a mess and Richard is out tonight]
-- go to the gym for pilates class [check, and Colby and I went to the parent child class after too]
-- menu plan [half check... it's almost done]
-- decide what desert I'm making for the party on Saturday [check... brownie bottom cheesecake]
-- convince Colby that he wants to take a nap [nope, but if you read the top of this post you knew that already]

Tomorrow's goals:
-- go to the Y with the boys
-- go get the boys' hair cut
-- go to the grocery store
-- dust the living room
-- figure out the cleaning and cooking schedule for Saturday's party

I want an octagon

****************************************************************************
Today's goals:
--get up at 5am and do p90x (might just do ab ripper x this time) [ok so it was closer to 5:30, but I did do ab ripper x and it killed me... guess I need to get back to doing abs!]
--bring Blake to school and pick him up [check.  got him there in time for breakfast and picked him up a bit early, but he had a blast]
--go to the Y for pilates (testing out this class for the first time) and then Parent-child fitness with Colby [check... I really liked the pilates class and will certainly hit that up again.  Colby didn't want to stay for the whole of his class, but I had taken him to the playground after dropping off Blake so I think he was tired and ready for his nap]
--make bacon to have breakfast for dinner with the boys (pancakes and bacon for them, omelet with bacon and cheese for me) [check... I added tomatoes to my omelet and have enough bacon for a BLT tomorrow, and more after that, but it is my craving]
[I also mopped the floor twice (I dropped a can of coke that EXPLODED), washed the sheets and re-made the beds, ran to Hallmark and Bath and Body Works, fixed my parent's computer over the phone and all the other fun mother stuff]

Tommorow's goals:
--get up at 5am and do p90x
--storytime at the libary
--clean the bathrooms
--have a fun day with the boys

good day

Today we had a great day together. It was one of those nothing big planned, so lets just go with it kind of days. I cleaned the bathrooms in the morning to get them done with and then we left for the gym around 9am. I had a shorter than wanted workout, I forgot my knee brace at Richard's friend's house on Sunday and my knee was tweaky while working out... AGAIN! One positive was the fact that Colby did great in the Y's daycare! This was the first time there were no tears and he actually played. When we got home I remembered that I needed to vacuum before speech and did that quickly. Colby decided to go down for his nap and I changed and made Blake's lunch while he watched Monster Jam. Then it was time for speech. After speech, we played Wii Resort. Then there were lots of loud rumbles coming from the sky so we decided to put the tv on expecting rain... which never came! After less than an hour, we decided to go outside and play. They love to go out and play on the porch. Blake and I played basketball. Colby, Blake and I played in the sandbox. Then the boys decided to get the monster trucks and play with them in the sandbox. For some reason, I didn't grab my camera today, maybe because I was in the thick of playing with them? After bath time, with purple water this time, we made dinner and played some more until Daddy came home. They got to play with Daddy for a bit and then get ready for bedtime. Daddy has been doing the bulk of the stories at bedtime which I think is the best. Is there anything that tugs at a Momma's heartstrings more than watching her guys snuggle up with a book?

Another thing that made this a good day.... Blake went all day without an accident!! We have been working hard on this and today it really seemed to click. I am having to give less and less reminders and seeing him recognize the signs in himself more and more. I'm a proud Momma.

I'm standing here listening to Colby blow kisses as a way to avoid going to sleep. Blake crashed as soon as he went to bed. Time for me to watch a bit of tv while Richard finishes up his day's work. Hope you had a great day today too!

******************************************************************************
Today's goals:
Tomorrow's goal:
--head into the Y for a cardio workout (without messing up my knee this time) [ok this is a half check since I did mess with my knee... oops]
--vacuum the house before speech [check]
--clean the bathrooms [check]

Tomorrow's goals:
--go to the gym for cardio dance (remember my brace as to not mess my knee more)
--mop the kitchen floor while Colby naps
--make chocolate chip cookies with Colby (for Richard to take while he travels)
--menu plan for the week

Up and down day here

Wow what a busy day and yet we didn't have much going on for most of the day... yes I know that is pretty much an oxymoron, but read on and you'll understand.

Blake was very excited to start his first day, he actually woke up BEFORE I crawled out of bed today (I didn't get up as early as I have been since I wasn't going to workout). He had a pretty good morning and was psyched to get into the car and head to his new school. When we brought him to the room where he goes first thing in the morning they were lined up to go to breakfast and he looks at me and says "I'm going to get in line, bye" That was the end of that.

Colby and I headed home and had breakfast and a few other things then I brought him to the gym for parent/child fitness (geared for children ages 1-4). He had a lot of fun. They had about 10 stations set up and did that for a while and then did parachute play. He enjoyed participating with the other children too.

It was nice to bring him home and put him down for a nap knowing that I didn't have to wake him up to go get Blake. We are going to work on pushing his nap to 11/11:30 now. We had him going down around 10:30 before because I'd have to wake him on Tues/Thurs to get Blake from the other day care. It also meant that I could sit down and relax for a bit too. Ok I should have been cleaning, but... I didn't want to!

We picked up Blake a bit after 3pm. He was doing a movement class when I got there and let him finish. He was excited to see us, but was even happier when I said he could finish. When they were done he wanted to get in line with his class and go back to class. He looked at Colby and said, "Get in line Colby, we have to go back to class". His teacher and the assistant director both commented to me about how well he assimilated into the new class. That made me very happy!

Tonight at bedtime was tough. The boys were both tired. We had had baths, cleaned and were getting ready for stories when Richard called to say goodnight (he does that whenever he can't be home for bedtime). The boys seemed to have a harder time with him not being here tonight. Blake told me he was going to wait up for Daddy to get home. Colby asked me "Daddy home night night?" Then when I checked on him later he said "I hear him, he here" "Who?" "Daddy, he here, I hear him!" Broke my heart. But at least he will be home soon enough, ok not soon enough, but soon.

**********************************************************************************
Today's goals:
-Bring Blake to his new day care for the first day! (check)
--remember to bring all the paperwork, change of clothes, checks etc with me to drop Blake off!! (check)
--As about the schedule of Blake's class so I can figure out what time to pick him up (check... sort of)
--vacuum the backseat of my car, I don't even want to think about what is back there (check)
--get to the gym? that is a big question mark as right now I'm wearing my knee brace and can barely bare weight on my right knee. But, I want to get back in for if anything to keep up the progress of helping Colby adjust to going. (well I got to the gym, but only so Colby could go to his class.. still no working out for me)
--remember to put the recycling out before bed (they get here EARLY on Wednesday mornings)... got to go put the trash out tonight as soon as Colby gives in and goes to sleep (oops... still need to do this, well have to wait for Colby to fall asleep before opening the garage, but I'll do it!)
--cook dinner... I didn't tonight since I didn't have anything planned so we had a "what do you want to eat" kind of night. (sort of.  I made frozen chicken tenders, homemade oven fries, and green beans)

Tomorrow's goals:
--groceries
--wash towels again since the boys keep spilling water everywhere so I have a huge pile of kitchen towels on the laundry room floor
--gym?  not holding my breath on this.  may have to give my knee a few more days... boo hiss!
--get outside with the boys
--mop the kitchen floor
--clean the bathrooms

splash

Man... just when you think you have had enough fun, life gets more interesting.

Colby and I headed to the grocery store this morning, we had no fruit in the house... strange I know. On the way home, I decided to treat him by stopping off at the park, there is one just outside our neighborhood. When we got there for some reason this time he was fascinated by the retention pond. He kept telling me "splash puddle". I tried to explain to him that it wasn't a puddle. Finally I distracted him enough to go play. We played on both the big and the little playgrounds. He climbed, went down the slides, played on the bouncy Clifford... you know all the cool playground things. Then just as we were leaving he again yelled "splash puddle". This time he took off faster, on a slope towards the pond. I was about 2 steps behind him, but with the momentum he built up and the fact that he jumped at the end while running... yeah he went face first into the pond. And not one step into the pond as I expected him to do... NOOOOO! There is a slight drop off there so he ended up in water just below my knees.

I didn't even think... just ran in the water and pulled him up. He was fine, coughing a bit and shaking, but fine. Me... well I was fine until I sat down then I started shaking. Never a fun thing.

We relaxed a minute or two on the bank of the pond. I actually called Richard while we were calming down. Then took him to the car and stripped him down and into a clean diaper. Came home and tossed him in the tub then put him down for a nap. Then changed all my clothes... hmmm I might need a nap too after that!

Let me tell you a story

I recently decided to bring out all my books on tape for the boys. I actually have a tape player in my car... which is sort of shocking since it is only a 5 year old car. I started by playing them on our drives. The boys LOVED this. My parents then bought Colby a new radio for the playroom with a tape deck. This has brought both boys loads of joy. They get so excited putting in a new story, but even more excited about putting in a story they've heard over and over.

At this time I do not have the books out with the tapes. I have done this for a variety of reasons. I didn't take the books out for the car because I didn't want them fighting over who got the book. I haven't brought them into the playroom because... well there are too many of them to pull them all out. I have been choosing a few of their favorites to put in the pile for bedtime books.

Blake has blown my mind lately with his ability to recall these stories. He can recite many of them with and without the books. He even tells you the author and what noise you hear for the page turns... hahaha!

The other night I heard Blake reciting Caps for Sale as he settled himself down for bed.

Colby has also learned many of these stories. He knows bits and pieces of each one and exactly where his favorite lines are said in the story.

But, the thing that really peeked my interest was the fact that the other day while they were playing in the playroom Blake was using imaginative play. Now you might say... what's unusual about that... nothing. Butttt, while he was playing he was talking in the way that a book is written. "Oh no Thomas is stuck. 'I'll help you' said Percy." Yes... that is a direct quote from Blake. And no it is not a quote from a story he heard. This went on for a good 10 minutes different scenarios, but still written in book style... hmmm maybe he will be an author when he grows up??

Birthday party take 2.... nope

As you know, we had originally planned Colby's birthday last weekend. But, that didn't happen since Blake was very sick with tonsillitis. We rescheduled it for this past Saturday. So we baked the cake, fired up the crock pots to make apple bbq pork and bbq beef. Then Friday night at 9:30pm Colby woke up with a 102.5 temp. We decided that we would take him in to the After Hours clinic just to make sure... yeah well that was the right decision. Colby ended up with tonsillitis too. His was also viral and there was nothing to do but wait it out.

My in-laws already had come in for the party so we decided to have the bbq for dinner and then do cake and ice cream anyway, since it was all made.

I had already decided that their would not be a 3rd attempt on the birthday party. We will find a time to celebrate with my family soon, but not have everyone over.

At least yesterday he seemed to be feeling better. The fever had broken and other than being a bit tired he seemed to be doing well. Now to just get him to eat a bit more we will be all set. At least he didn't get as severe a case as Blake did.
