Fabric grocery bags

I put a poll up the other day about fabric grocery bags. I decided to post a post about it too and get more conversation going. If you read my blog on a regular basis you know I am far from "Earthy crunchy", but I do have fabric grocery bags.

I decided to buy one Walmart bag for the mid-week trips to the Walmart Neighborhood Market up the street from us. My thought was it would be easier to carry the fabric bag on my shoulder while carrying Colby and holding Blake's hand. It would also make thing easier when I'm bringing things into the house.

After I used this a few times, I decided to go buy one at Publix, our local grocery store, when I was there for a quick shop. After I did this, I decided hey... you fit a whole lot more in these which means less trips to and from the car.

The next week when we did our "big shop", I picked up 3 more Publix bags. I think it's funny that I can now bring home 4 Publix fabric bags filled with the same amount of groceries that used to take maybe 10 bags.

I do use the plastic bags around the house: dog poop pick up, in the diaper pail, etc... So will I only ever use the fabric grocery bags.... no. But, I do find it was worth the $4 that I paid to get the 4 bags that I have... ok wait the $4.50 to get the 5 bags that I have. I feel that this is a little thing that I can do to help. It is good for the enviornment. It is good for the grocery stores (think about how much they save not having to have the plastic bags).

Just something to think about for those who haven't bought any yet.

  1. That's something I think about a lot and just haven't done. My husband does a lot of our shopping so I'd have to convince him! :)

  3. I use them too! They are great, so much easier and at our grocery store you can use a personal scanner and scan and bag your groceries as you go and the fabric bags make that WAY easier. I have even started using them at other stores like Target and Mall stores.

  5. I only have a couple and keep them in my car. They do come in handy when I'm picking up a few items.

  6. When I went to Florida to see my mom, the have a Sweet Briar. They by far have the best of all the fabric bags. I guess what I love about them is that they fold up and are larger than the standard walmart fabric bag. Having a family of 5, I do a lot of shopping, and have 10 of those bags. They are a little more pricey at $2 each, but are nearly twice the size. Now I just have to find a way to remember to take them each and every time.
My biggest pet peeve is only have 1 item in a bag. I am fairly strong, and like my bags full to the point of nearly breaking (I hate making a dozen trips to the car). I think my record is 12 bags at once. since my kids are now older, they each have to carry a bag or 2 into the house. They carry and I put away.

  7. Fabric bags are the best. I still use my plastic ones as well for the small garbage cans around the house. But I find the fabric bags are more sturdy, hold more groceries which means less trips back and forth from the house to the car and they can be used for ANYTHING! I use one as a beach bag with Jacob's shovel and buckets, one for library books.

  16. I don't have any of them yet but always think I should get some. My sticking point is that I am a fly by the seat of my pants shopper. I never know when I'm going to go and I would probably forget to take them with me. (You know, like I ALWAYS forget the coupons!) My vehicle isn't really good for storing things int here either. But you do make a good point so I may need to rethink it soon.
