I was thinking about this blogger's milestone, reaching 1000 posts and it got me wondering about how we perceive a milestones significance. Some milestones that seemed like they were really significant events when they happened, fade in importance (or maybe relevance) as time passes (or as other milestones are achieved). Others never seem to lose their importance.
Remember when you got your drivers license and first started driving? That was exciting. Every time you got a chance to drive, that was a moment to savior. Now driving sometimes feels like a chore (at least until I get my sports car, nudge, nudge, wink, wink). Contrast that to the day you were married, or the birth of a child. Those memories are still vivid for me.
But even as I reflect on those memories of the past, I yearn to reach the next milestone (and I'm not talking about the one in May that will cause me to spend many extra days at work getting ready to sell a simulator to the Army). Maybe that yearning is due to the sense of pride and accomplishment when a milestone is reached. Maybe its due to the sense of anticipation of that next milestone (what will it be, when will it happen, where will I be). Maybe I'm looking forward to sharing the milestone with my family. Or maybe I just want to make my history, take hold of life with both hand, give it a good strong shake and hang on for the ride. Whichever it is, I'm ready.
So on this milestone of the 1000th post, I'd ask that you celebrate this milestone not only by rekindling the memory of important milestones past, but also by looking forward to many exciting milestones to be made in the future with those that you care about. Don't just sit back and wait for that milestone to happen, go out and make it happen.
Thanks for writing my 1000th post Richard. It certainly put it all in perspective and let me tell you I'm ready to take on the next milestone with you at my side.
ReplyDeleteWOW! 1000 posts, thats awesome. I wonder if I will ever get there.
ReplyDeleteMilestones...hmmmm....I would love to get a book that I am working on published... that would be a milestone of a lifetime for me!
I don't know if I'm looking forward to or dreading this milestone but I think the next big milestone for me is going to be getting all of my kids out of diapers! Granted, the twins are only 7 months old...so I'm thinking this is more than a few years away - but buying that last bag of diapers/pull-ups is going to be a pretty big deal!
ReplyDeleteHappy 1000! I'm not sure what milestone I will be looking forward too...I'd really like for my boys to stop growing, is that a milestone? although i do know its one that will not happen!
ReplyDeleteHappy 1000! I was wondering who was writing that post when they said sports car and work ;) Great post.
ReplyDeleteRight now I try not to "look forward" to any milestones because if I do, I find that life passes way to quickly! I try to live life in the moment and appreciate what I have right now!
congrats on the 1000th and thanks for the kick in the pants to get me motivated about today and tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteCongrats!!!
ReplyDeleteI love tackling new milestones. Congrats on 1000 posts. I am almost there.
