Tie-Died Cookies

I love to try out new recipes no matter if they are ones I created in my head, ones I found on-line or in a  cookbook. Over the years, I have tried recipes from a lot of chefs, one who seems to match my cooking style is Rachael Ray. As a mother, you've got to appreciate the concept of a 30 Minute Meal! Rachael Ray often says that her recipes are just methods. She encourages her viewers to take her recipes and make them their own. I "Lori-ize" almost everything I cook, tailoring the recipe to my families taste. I decided to combine these two ideas and what you see here is the result. Each week I'll create a meal based on a recipe and let you know what we thought. I will give you the original recipe and let you know how I "Lori-ized" it.  Hope you enjoy Tasty Tuesday!

I was reading The Adventures in Ryan today and she had made Tie-Dyed Cookies, she got the recipe from What I Live For.  So I popped over to see the recipe and how they were made.  I didn't have all the ingredients to make her exact cookie recipe, but reading it I realized it was just a basic rolled sugar cookie recipe.  So I pulled out another recipe that I did have all the ingredients for and went with that.  I'm not posting a sugar cookie recipe because there are tons out there, just pick your favorite (o:

After you make the basic cookie recipe, divide the dough into the number of colors you want to use.  I choose to do 4.  I had Wilton's color gel so my colors are a lot brighter than if you use liquid food coloring.  Colby picked: PhotobucketPhotobucket

The put down wax paper.  Break the colors into balls and put them on the wax paper

Use the wax paper to roll it together into a log

Wrap it up and put it in the fridge according to your dough's recipe.  Mine said an hour

Cut into disks and put on cookie sheets.  I flattened mine out and sprinkled them with colored sugar

Bake according to the recipe

I added more sugar after the came out of the oven, but before removing to the cooling racks

These were really good.  My first batch was slightly undercooked and are my favorites.  I froze most of them so Richard could have some when he gets home.  The boys helped a bit, but were totally fascinated by the cookies when they were done baking.

I'd make these again.  I wonder if you added a bit of flavor to them if they'd be even better??  Hmmm maybe add some other extract of add lemon juice or something to add a flavor that makes you go... hmmm what is that?  We will see

Oh and if you've made it this far... the picture yesterday.  Colby had the colored cookie dough all over his hands and face.  He helped put the globs of dough onto the wax paper after licking the beater.

  9. I did this as a cake recipe. Just made a white cake and divided the batter to make the different colors. Now I did it like you and just dumped the colors into the pans in a random fashion but my niece told me if you dump it in in layers it looks like a rainbow. I think I'll try these cookies next time.
