It's time to sleep

Today was one of those days when I wish Colby still took a nap. It wasn't that I needed the alone time, it was the fact that he was soooo tired. He is very congested and that makes sleeping a challenge for him. So even when he gets a full night sleep he often wakes up tired. He was happy to at least wake up in time to see Blake and Daddy before they left. Many mornings he sleeps right through this time. He was not his happy cheerful self today it was even worse after the Y. He had a great time playing at the Y and in his class. The group fitness room at our Y's air conditioner is broken... do you see an issue here? It was very hot in there for his class and he wanted to stick it out to get his sticker at that end. He did a good job, but came home very tired. I let him eat lunch on the couch, not that he actually ate. He doesn't eat very well when he doesn't feel good.... thank God for "yogurt milk" because that is often the only real food I get into him on those days. While he was eating his lunch he kept sliding down on the couch and I swore he was going to fall asleep. He put up a good fight and didn't sleep. I asked him more than once if he wanted to lay down and do "snoozes", but he was adamant that he wasn't going to his room.

Tonight he settled right away to begin with and then the congestion kicked in. When this happens he wants to be cuddled, he wants to snuggle. This would be fine if it meant he'd fall asleep but like he did when he was younger, but now he doesn't. He sees this as a time to fool around and play which then makes it frustrating. You want to help him settle, but need him to realize that he can't choose something to get away with not sleeping. It's such a hard choice. When Blake was young we did cry it out with him and it still comes in handy in the fact that he can settle himself on his own no matter the situation. It isn't always fast or smooth but he doesn't expect to be cuddled and soothed to sleep. When we tried this with Colby we had TWO crying children. It didn't work. Not only did it upset Blake, but Colby would make himself sick crying which isn't good. So other methods were put into place for him. The challenge is the transition. A majority of nights he just goes to bed and goes to sleep. It's how to help him on those nights when he can't just fall asleep.

As I type this up Richard is in Colby's room. I can hear Colby on the monitor playing and trying to get Richard to play with him. But, we know he is exhausted, as mentioned earlier. So, is it that he is over tired? Is he too congested to fall asleep? Did he get himself overworked when he first started having issues settling? Who knows. It will just be interesting to see how long it takes him to settle.

Oh the joys of parenthood! Hope your little ones go to sleep smoothly for you, and if not know you aren't alone (o:

  1. Oh the days of waiting for them to fall asleep. Now I am spoiled with a video monitor for my grandchildren. I wish I had one of those when my kids were little.

  2. :( I think it's funny how hard they can fight sleeping. I hope he settles down the congestion clears quickly so he can get some rest!

  3. Sometimes it takes forever for Ben to fall asleep. He's at the age where he still needs a nap but not really....if that makes sense. So when he naps, it takes him a long time to fall asleep in the evening. I hear him talking for over an hour. Oh well...at least he isn't crying!

  4. Oh the joys of sleep!! Avery's not too bad, but she definitely has her days! She does better at night then at nap. It's like she thinks we all party and have fun when she goes to nap and she doesn't want to miss out. Little does she now that not much goes on when she sleeps, a little blogging and some cleaning!
