Reading
This is a sight you see quite often in my house. The last few weeks Blake has become more and more fascinated with books. When he was really little he always had a book in hand or close by. He and I would sit for 30+ minutes reading book after book. Now we do it for near an hour. He also reads to himself a lot. Often, when I notice that he is really quiet I will find him sitting somewhere with a stack of books reading to himself. He can read on a first grade reading level already. Once challenge we have with him is he has become accustomed to knowing the words and just inserts a word he knows instead of sounding out the word (which he can do).
Every night we read one chapter to him in his chapter book and then he reads a level one reader to us. We go through a new book every day and then the next week we repeat them or another older book. He is getting really good at the books he has read once and can read with few errors on the third go round.
As a teacher, and mother who is an avid reader, it makes me happy to see him love books and reading so much. I really enjoy reading with both my sons. Colby is now getting more one-on-one reading time too so he is beginning to memorize his favorite stories too. I know he too will be an early reader.
I hope you take time each day to read to your children. There is a ton of research that proves that reading to your child everyday is so important for the social, emotional and educational development of your child. (o:

So great! Go Blake! What an amazing gift to give a child.
ReplyDeleteEliza inserts words she thinks make sense and doesn't sound out even though she often could sound it out if she tried. I can't believe how many words she is recognizing now by site- so exciting!
I love this. We've been reading to Finn since he was born and now at 3 he still asks for at least five stories each night. I was always an avid reader growing up too and I love passing it along to him.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! This is so true. It really needs to be a daily thing. Together and separately. Jacob has a new library book every 2 days and a daily reading assignment from school every day. Plus you can't forget book at bed time.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe he is reading already! that's awesome!
ReplyDeleteTrue True!! We started reading to our babies as babies... ;) and they are strong readers now... makes a mommy happy!!
ReplyDeleteI think it's so awesome that he's reading at such an advanced level - but not surprised at all! :) Lily loves to read and be read to. She's not reading independently (she does recite and makes up stories to match the pictures) - but she's getting closer and closer to sounding out words. She can sound out words and then try to spell them them though - like one day, she said, "Poop. Starts with P. o-o-p." :)
ReplyDeleteWe love reading in our house too. We have the bedtime reading with daddy and then she wants me to read books to her all day long. I love it when she comes over to me with a book in hand and says "read please." Such a great habit to start early. Sounds like Blake is off to an incredible start!!
